As of the 2023 granting cycle, in excess of $230,000 has been granted to Hornby Island non-profit groups, by the Hornby Community Fund. The chart to the left depicts the balance between sectors of the granting decisions to 20 Outside the pie chart, adjacent to the sector pie piece, the recipient groups are identified.
Annual interest income from the investments is distributed by the local Community Board. Within the confines of "community fund" regulations, the Advisory Board has developed and maintained criteria for disbursement of the grants. The grants are given for community projects on Hornby Island.
Historically, at the Hornby Fall Fair the Advisory Board members present the annual Grants. In 2019 a shift was made to go online, and the cheques are now issued directly from our host organization, the Comox Valley Community Foundation..
HISTORIC GRANTING BREAKDOWN:
There is now close to $600,000 in the endowment fund. The investment income on this amount funds our granting, in perpetuity. So this capital gives us the ability to continue to grant meaningful amounts every year going forward. Our goal is to get the capital balance to $1.5 million by 2035 through donations and bequests.
Our granting ability increases with every dollar donated to the capital account so we are very grateful to all past and future donors for making this fund such a powerful source of support for the good works of Hornby non-profits.
Between 2002 and 2023, $230,313. has been granted from General Funds. (additional funds go to the "donor accounts", where the interest is for a specific purpose. There are two Donor Funds. The first is for the Festival Society (since 2020, grants shown below were paid out prior to the Donor Fund being established) for their operations and the second is the Bruce Fairbairn Fund (an annual bursary for a music student).
Additionally, since partnering with the Comox Valley Community Foundation, the success rate for our local organizations, for their funding, has been enhanced.
The annual Book Sale Team, also entrusts distribution of those proceeds to the Community Fund process.
